Meera Syal

Meera was born and raised in Wolverhampton, and studied English and Drama at Manchester University, graduating with a double first. Her career so far has been both wide-ranging and distinguished.

After many years of theatre work, including seasons at the Royal Court & Royal National Theatre, she established herself as a gifted writer/performer in series such as The Real McCoy, and the multi-award-winning sketch show, Goodness Gracious Me.

Major TV roles followed, in series such as In Deep, Bedtime, Mrs.Bradley Murder Mysteries, and Bad Girls, plus regular guest appearances on Have I Got News For You, , Room 101 and Parkinson.

Meera has written two acclaimed novels, Anita and Me (plus the film screenplay) and Life Isn't All Ha Ha He He, (adapted by and featuring Meera in a 3-part series for BBC1) . She wrote the book for the hit musical Bombay Dreams, currently running on Broadway.. Her most recent theatre work was in The Vagina Monologues, in London and New York.

Upcoming projects include another series of The Kumars at Number 42, the hit show in which she plays naughty granny Ummi, (BAFTA-nominated as Best Comedy Performance for 2003), plus a new series of MIT, playing D.I.Wishart, and a documentary tracing her family tree for the new BBC2 series, Who Do You Think You Are? Meera was awarded the MBE for Services to the Arts in 1997, and the award for Creative Originality for Women In Film & Television in 2002.
